Diagnostic questions for exploring prior ideas in biology

Move beyond a misconception list by collecting reasons, critiquing a representation and choosing a next teaching move.

Use a choose–reason–critique–revisit–transfer loop. A carefully designed option can make a prior account visible, but the pupil’s reason, response to evidence and changed-case explanation provide the more useful teaching evidence.

The worked concept is the source of plant biomass. Use scientifically accurate questions and representations, and treat each answer pattern as evidence from that class rather than a universal misconception.

Have a biology specialist check the scientific content and confirm permission for any image or dataset. This sequence does not specify a practical method; assess the risks separately if you add one.

Ask pupils to choose, then explain

Start with one closed question containing plausible accounts. Run it live in Praktikal and inspect the distribution of answers and progress. Supported closed items may be automatically graded.

The closed choice can be checked, while the separate explanation remains evidence for teacher interpretation.

Follow the choice with a separate, focused reason prompt. A short response can collect a written explanation, while an image response can collect a pupil-created representation. Do not infer a complete mental model from the selected option: diagnostic questions reveal useful prior ideas only when the teacher interprets the responses in context.

Before teaching, decide what each pattern would prompt. For example:

  • compare two accounts if the reasons reveal different meanings behind one option;
  • clarify the question if pupils interpret the stem differently;
  • or proceed to the representation if reasons expose the intended conceptual distinction.

Praktikal shows the responses. It does not label a misconception or choose the intervention.

Critique a representation, rather than merely reveal it

Place one accurate plant-biomass diagram, short text or dataset beside focused questions in the same Praktikal lesson. Images, tables, graphs, simulations or embeds and generic questions are available as building blocks.

The evidence source and focused questions remain in one lesson without pretending that Praktikal constructs or interprets the biological model.

Ask pupils:

  1. What does this representation show directly?
  2. What does it ask us to infer?
  3. What has been omitted or simplified?
  4. Which initial account can it support or challenge, and why?

Representations can clarify a relationship, but they can also overload or mislead when their conventions and omissions are left implicit. Praktikal does not provide a biological model builder, and looking at a diagram is not evidence that pupils have coordinated its meaning.

Use the response pattern for a teaching decision

During live delivery, use answers and progress to select contrasting, anonymised reasons for discussion. Ask pupils to compare the evidence each reason uses, not to guess which classmate is “wrong”.

The class pattern is visible; identifying the underlying idea and choosing the next teaching move remain teacher decisions.
  • if pupils treat soil as the main source of new biomass, revisit the matter represented and the boundaries of the diagram;
  • if they repeat vocabulary without connecting matter and process, ask for a more explicit causal account;
  • if they coordinate the evidence, move to a changed case.

These are proposed teaching decisions, not automated diagnoses or prevalence claims. Biology teaching should attend to alternative conceptions and conceptual connections, but the evidence does not show that this exact sequence repairs them.

Revisit the answer and name what changed

Ask pupils to answer the original question again and add a revised explanation: What evidence changed, qualified or retained your account?

Praktikal can show the new responses and let the teacher review open reasoning and provide feedback. It does not automatically map before-and-after conceptions or score biological explanations. A changed closed answer is short-term evidence, not sufficient evidence of durable conceptual change.

Feedback should point to the next action: use evidence from the representation, repair an omitted process, distinguish observation from inference or qualify a claim.

Transfer the account to a changed case

Change the carbon-dioxide availability without introducing a procedure. Ask for a closed prediction and a separate reason that uses the same underlying account while acknowledging the representation’s limits.

The task can run live, as homework or self-paced work. Review results, leave feedback and use the pattern to choose reteaching, another representation, a further case or extension.

One successful response shows how the pupil handled that case. The teacher judges the biological reasoning and selects the next move.
